While traditional CBT often focuses on challenging the validity of distressing thoughts, third-wave perspectives emphasize our relationship to those thoughts. From this vantage point, avoidance—specifically experiential avoidance—is identified as a primary driver of human suffering and psychological rigidity. - [Choosing a Residential Treatment Center](https://www.confluencevt.com/newsandviews/choosing-a-residential-treatment-center/): Choosing a residential mental health care program for your young adult is a difficult decision. Often this decision is made during a time of high stress, disagreements about what level of care is most appropriate, and concerns for the safety and future of loved ones. Once you’ve determined that residential treatment is the most effective next step, deciding on the particular program can be confusing and overwhelming. Seeing beyond the marketing and website materials to truly understand the services, safety and quality can be even more difficult. The criteria below address three main considerations: program safety, efficacy/quality, and client-centered services. The foundation of a safe facility is its commitment to oversight and professional standards. The same is true in the academic literature. The research is clear. Experiences in nature offer a profound benefit for human well-being. Time outside is crucial for human health. Moreover, incorporating nature into therapy can supercharge the treatment experience. Time in nature allows the nervous system to rest. It supports calm and focus. It declutters our minds, giving us more bandwidth to attend to our internal experience. It can even help us move beyond becoming too preoccupied with our own thoughts and feelings and redirect our attention to the world around us.
