Young and Teen Residential Treatment Concord and New Hampshire Residents Can Trust

Confluence Behavioral Health serves young adults across the region from two Vermont locations — our inpatient center in Thetford Center and a second outpatient program in Burlington. Our mental health treatment program specializes in working with young adults between the ages of 18 and 28, from college students, recent grads, and anyone navigating that uncertain stretch of early adulthood where life feels overwhelming.

Our clinical staff has the experience to treat a range of conditions, including:

  • Anxiety and OCD (including Exposure and Response Prevention therapy)
  • Depression and Bipolar Disorder
  • Trauma and PTSD
  • ADHD and neurodivergence

Neurodivergence is something we take seriously here. If you or your loved one struggles with executive functioning, cognitive gaps, or social avoidance, we don’t treat those as side issues — they’re central to how we build our young adult programs and support each person’s recovery.

Programs and Levels of Care at Confluence

Finding the right path to healing can be a challenging journey, especially for teens and young adults navigating complex mental health struggles. At Confluence, we offer compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to each individual’s needs. Our teen residential treatment Concord residents can trust provides a safe and structured environment where adolescents can focus on their recovery, build resilience, and develop the tools they need to thrive.

Residential Treatment

Confluence’s residential program offers the highest level of support—structured, immersive care that removes young adults from the stressors of daily life so they can focus entirely on healing. The residential experience moves through three phases: stabilization, assessment, and treatment, all running concurrently once our client is settled.

Stabilization creates the conditions for honest self-reflection.1 Assessment helps clients understand what is actually happening in their lives, viewed through a lens of positive psychology. Treatment then builds on that foundation, developing the skills, insight, and behaviors needed to sustain wellness over time.

Most clients complete a 90-day program, though the timeline is customized based on individual progress and clinical needs. We strive to work with a timeline that makes sense for our client’s recovery, not just a predetermined schedule. This flexible approach allows our clients to achieve lasting change and build a solid foundation for their recovery journey.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

For young adults who don’t require residential care, or who are stepping down from it, Confluence offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) based in downtown Burlington, VT. The IOP runs three sessions per week, each three hours long, and incorporates both clinical therapy and experiential programming, including yoga, rock climbing, and outdoor activities.

This level of care suits young adults who need structured support while maintaining some connection to their daily lives, relationships, and responsibilities.

Aftercare and Transitional Living

Confluence also offers transitional living through Confluence Transitions, which provides apartments and a holistic support structure focused on independent living skills, academic guidance, career development, executive functioning coaching, and wellness support. This program bridges the gap between intensive treatment and full independence—an especially critical phase for young adults who have completed residential care.

Evidence-Based Therapies at Confluence

Confluence’s clinical model draws on several well-established therapeutic approaches:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): The backbone of Confluence’s skills-driven model. Focuses on reducing symptomatology, building insight, and changing thought and behavior patterns.
  • Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP): A gold-standard treatment for OCD and anxiety disorders.2
  • Family Therapy and Family Systems Theory: Confluence integrates families directly into the treatment process. Parent coaching and family therapy sessions help families understand their own patterns and learn how to support clients effectively.
  • Psychodynamic Approaches: Insight-driven work exploring identity, self-awareness, and deeper emotional patterns.
  • Trauma-Informed Care: All clinical work is conducted with an awareness of trauma’s role in shaping behavior, relationships, and mental health.

The program is explicitly skills-driven—the goal isn’t just symptom relief, but equipping young adults with the tools to manage challenges independently. That includes building confidence and competence, reducing social avoidance, developing community, and moving clients from passive avoidance toward active engagement in their own wellness.3

Why Travel to Vermont for Mental Health Treatment?

For families in Concord and surrounding New Hampshire communities, traveling to Vermont for treatment may feel like a significant step. It’s worth understanding why that distance can actually be an advantage.

Residential treatment works best when young adults have genuine separation from the stressors, relationships, and environments that have contributed to their challenges. Vermont’s natural setting, quiet, scenic, and distinct from the pace of urban or suburban life, creates the kind of physical and psychological space where real reflection becomes possible.

Confluence’s location supports a treatment philosophy built around engagement and action. Experiential programming, outdoor activities, and community-building are woven into our clinical model, not as extras, but as integral parts of how healing happens. For young adults who have been stuck in avoidance, being embedded in a new environment with new experiences can be exactly the catalyst needed.
