What Is Residential Treatment for Depression?

Residential treatment, or inpatient treatment, involves living at a treatment facility for a period of time while receiving intensive, structured mental health care. Unlike outpatient programs, where patients attend therapy sessions and return home each day, residential treatment provides 24/7 support in a safe, therapeutic environment.

For young adults struggling with depression that has become difficult to manage in everyday life,  residential treatment centers for depression in Vermont can provide the level of care needed to help patients progress along their unique recovery journey.

At Confluence Behavioral Health, our residential program is designed specifically for young adults. We understand the unique challenges young adults experience, and our team is committed to providing compassionate, personalized care that helps patients not only manage their depression symptoms but also grow in their confidence, independence, and sense of purpose.

Signs You May Benefit From Residential Depression Treatment

Not everyone who struggles with depression needs residential care. The severity of the condition and symptoms impacts whether residential depression treatment may be right for you. Below are several signs to look for that you may benefit from residential depression treatment.

  • Depression Symptoms Are Significantly Interfering With Daily Life: If depression is making it difficult to attend school, maintain relationships, care for yourself, or carry out basic personal or professional responsibilities, you may benefit from residential support.
  • Outpatient Treatment Has Not Been Enough in the Past: If you have already tried therapy or outpatient programs without experiencing meaningful improvement, residential treatment offers a more intensive approach.
  • Struggling with Thoughts of Self-Harm: If depression is accompanied by thoughts of self-harm or suicide, 24/7 residential support is an important treatment approach.

You should never feel afraid or ashamed to ask for help. Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. Gone are the days of suffering in silence– help is available!

What to Expect From Residential Treatment Centers For Depression in Vermont

At Confluence Behavioral Health, our residential treatment for depression is built around each patient’s unique needs. We offer a wide range of treatment options for our young adult patients, including:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This is a common type of psychotherapy for depression. CBT helps patients identify and challenge the negative thought patterns that fuel depressive symptoms, replacing them with healthier ways to cope with symptoms

Family Therapy: Family therapy helps improve communication, repair relationships, and build a stronger support network for the patient’s ongoing recovery. Depression and other mental health disorders can unfortunately fracture relationships with others. Family therapy looks to rebuild these relationships.

We also offer a wide range of treatment options available from family systems therapy to exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy, and more comprehensive treatment options to support your unique recovery needs best.

Throughout our residential treatment program, patients also receive support around daily structure, healthy habits, and life skills. These are all critical in supporting patients to lead healthier, happier lives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Depression symptoms are more than just feeling sad on a difficult day. Key signs of depression include persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness that last for weeks or more. Other symptoms like loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed, changes in sleep and appetite, difficulty concentrating, and, in more severe cases, thoughts of self-harm or suicide are all symptoms to look out for. It is critical to seek professional support rather than waiting for things to improve on their own or ignoring your symptoms.

Outpatient treatment involves attending therapy sessions while continuing to live at home, which works well for patients with milder symptoms and strong support systems. Residential treatment provides 24/7 care in a structured therapeutic environment. Residential treatment is best for patients with more moderate to severe depression, those who have not found success with outpatient care, or those whose home environment is not conducive to recovery. Our team will help you determine which level of care is right for your unique recovery needs.

The length of a residential treatment program varies depending on the individual's needs, the severity of their depression, and their treatment progress. Programs can range from a few weeks to several months. At Confluence Behavioral Health, our team works with each patient to establish a treatment timeline that reflects their unique recovery goals. The focus is always on providing the right care for as long as it is needed. Aftercare planning is also an important part of our approach, ensuring patients have continued support as they transition out of residential care.
