Plymouth

Young adults between 18 and 28 face a unique set of challenges, from academic pressure to shifting identities, uncertain futures, and, for many, mental health conditions that have gone unaddressed for years. For families and individuals in New Hampshire seeking specialized Plymouth mental health treatment programs, Confluence Behavioral Health offers a nearby alternative in neighboring Vermont. Our comprehensive, evidence-based program is designed specifically for adolescents in the prime of their lives. Located in Thetford Center, VT, Confluence provides a structured yet dynamic environment where young adults can step away from daily stressors and genuinely begin to heal.

Our co-ed residential and outpatient mental health facilities offer a full continuum of care. We’re here to guide you through any stage of mental health recovery through our Residential, Intensive Outpatient (IOP), and Outpatient programming. Guided by our philosophy of “Engage in Change,” Confluence works with clients to build real skills, develop self-awareness, and move toward lasting independence. For those searching for Plymouth mental health support that goes beyond a standard clinical setting, Confluence offers something meaningfully different.

Plymouth Mental Health: Why Young Adults Need Specialized Care

Mental health challenges during young adulthood don’t look the same as they do in adolescence or mid-life. The 18–28 window is marked by major developmental transitions—leaving home, entering college or the workforce, navigating relationships—and mental health conditions often surface or intensify during this period.1 At Confluence, we work with young adults navigating a range of challenges, including:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • OCD
  • PTSD
  • ADHD
  • Bipolar disorder

A significant number of our clients are also neurodivergent, and we tailor our approach to meet them where they are. Unfortunately, generic treatment programs rarely account for this complexity.

A one-size-fits-all approach can leave young adults feeling misunderstood, disengaged, or without the practical tools they need once they leave treatment. Confluence was built with this problem in mind. Our engagement-based model prioritizes action alongside insight—helping clients not just understand their struggles, but actively change their relationship to them.

Confluence's Continuum of Care

Treatment at Confluence follows a thoughtful continuum, beginning with stabilization and moving through assessment and active treatment. Most clients participate in a 90-day program, which provides enough time to build real momentum and lasting skills.

Residential Experience

Our residential program removes clients from the noise and pressure of everyday life, creating space for genuine stabilization and self-discovery. Through evidence-based therapies—including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), Psychodynamic approaches, Trauma-Informed care, and Family Systems Theory—clients begin to understand what’s happening in their lives and how to navigate it more effectively. Our program builds confidence, competence, and community, all within a structured daily rhythm.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Confluence’s IOP is based in downtown Burlington, VT, and runs three three-hour sessions per week. Sessions incorporate experiential elements—yoga, outdoor experiences, and access to a rock climbing gym—alongside traditional clinical work. This blend of engagement and therapy reflects Confluence’s core belief that meaningful change happens through action, not just reflection. It’s also proven that holistic therapies such as yoga and outdoor activities can greatly benefit individuals in recovery by promoting physical, mental, and emotional well-being.2

Transitional Living and Aftercare

The transition out of residential care is one of the most vulnerable points in recovery. Confluence’s transitional living program bridges that gap by helping young adults develop independent living skills, pursue academic goals, and build careers—all with continued mental health support from our dedicated care team. Aftercare planning is built into the treatment process from day one.

Beyond Therapy: Holistic Support for Young Adults

What sets Confluence apart from many other residential programs is its commitment to treating the whole person—going beyond symptom reduction to focus on real life preparation. This is reflected across several key pillars of our program, including:

  • Executive Functioning and Academic Support: Many clients arrive with significant gaps in organization, time management, and academic confidence. Confluence addresses these directly, supporting clients who plan to return to school.
  • Career Development: Staff work with clients to clarify vocational goals and begin building pathways toward meaningful work.
  • Wellness Coaching: Physical wellness, stress management, and healthy habits are woven into the program.
  • Adventure and Community: Rock climbing, outdoor experiences, yoga, and shared activities build trust, resilience, and social connection—skills that transfer directly into everyday life.

Family involvement is also central. Parent coaching and family therapy are integrated throughout the program, recognizing that healing doesn’t happen alone.
