Autism Spectrum Disorder & Neurodivergence
Rediscovering Confidence, Redefining Goals
For neurodivergent young adults, the journey to independence is rarely a straightforward path. Navigating a neurotypical world can often be exhausting, resulting in burnout, social fatigue, and anxiety. At Confluence, we do not see Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or neurodivergence as conditions to be “solved” or “fixed.” Instead, we view ASD and neurodivergence as unique ways of experiencing the world, each with its own strengths, perspectives, and support needs.
Our goal is to help neurodivergent young adults rediscover their confidence, redefine their goals, and reclaim their path forward within a safe and deeply supportive community. We achieve this by addressing challenges, creating accommodations, and building skills to support areas of need.

Vermont Neurodivergent Care at Confluence Behavioral Health
We combine advanced clinical interventions with transformative real-world experiences. Our continuum of care, ranging from residential treatment to transitional living, expands support into dynamic and natural environments. This approach allows young adults to build, practice, and master essential life skills in real time. We collaborate with participants to develop skills in self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and executive functioning, tailored to how each individual’s brain operates.
Effective support for young adults with autism takes a holistic approach that respects their neurodiversity while fostering practical resilience.
Our Approach to Neurodivergent Care
Confluence collaborates with young adults to help them navigate the world with confidence and self-assurance. Our therapeutic programming focuses on three core areas, designed to empower young adults and build a foundation for lifelong, independent success:
Treatment
We address co-occurring mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression, and trauma while helping individuals develop essential executive functioning and self-advocacy skills.
Management
We work closely with individuals to manage the stress of living in a neurotypical world. Our goal is to equip them with personalized sensory and emotional regulation strategies to prevent social fatigue and burnout, ultimately fostering adaptive functioning.
Accommodation
Accommodation involves intentionally adapting our physical spaces, communication methods, and program structures to remove barriers. This support helps individuals process the world in their own way, enabling them to focus their energy on personal growth and building independence, rather than trying to fit into a traditional mold.
What We Focus On
Co-Occurring Challenges
Addressing the anxiety, depression, and trauma that frequently accompany the neurodivergent experience due to chronic masking or misunderstanding.
Executive Functioning & Life Skills
Developing personalized systems for time management, organization, and independent living that do not rely on neurotypical standards, but rather on what genuinely works for the individual.
Social Connection & Communication
Fostering authentic relationships in a pressure-free, peer-supported environment. We emphasize understanding personal boundaries, navigating social nuances, and finding a sense of belonging without masking.
Sensory & Emotional Regulation
Helping participants identify sensory triggers and burnout patterns while building healthy coping mechanisms and self-soothing strategies.
Navigating Life Transitions
Providing actionable support for the leap into higher education, the workforce, or independent living, ensuring young adults feel equipped and empowered.
Confluence Can Help With Neurodivergent Care in Vermont
At Confluence, participants engage in a holistic approach to health, gaining insights into themselves and their challenges while developing and practicing tools for long-term wellness. Families accompany participants on this journey, exploring new patterns, building trust, and understanding their own challenges in order to provide effective support. Throughout this process, Confluence clinicians, staff, and parent coaches collaborate with participants and their families to address difficulties, navigate crucial conversations, and create solutions that promote progress.
Explore Your Health Insurance Benefits
Confluence admissions staff are available to help families navigate and better understand the insurance landscape as it relates to mental healthcare services. Our Residential and Outpatient programs work with insurances, however our coaching and transitional housing services do not accept insurance at this time. Confluence can bill insurance directly and private pay options are available as well.
